Good News for Actual People

A state senator from Vermont has introduced a resolution calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution stipulating that corporations are not people under U.S. law. This coming after the Supreme Court infamously ruled in the Citizens United case that corporations were legal persons, allowing them unlimited spending in elections.

Justice John Paul Stephens, in his dissenting opinion, says it best:

“Corporations have no consciences, no beliefs, no feelings, no thoughts, no desires. Corporations help structure and facilitate the activities of human beings, to be sure, and their ‘personhood’ often serves as a useful legal fiction. But they are not themselves members of ‘We the People’ by whom and for whom our Constitution was established.”
